Have seeds will travel!

Our challenge is to design a deployable crop production system capable of supporting the nutritional requirements of a crew.

Our proposal: "Cube on Mars"

Create a hybrid and viable food system similar to the Advanced Plant Habitat system. As mentioned before, our system will be controlled mainly by computer, meaning the crew doesn't need to intervene. However, the crops will be visible to the crew at all times. Furthermore, the astronauts will be able to manipulate the crops during the last stages of growth of the former.

Explanation

How our proposal works!

The Crop

The Crop is a 5x3 meters distribution of soil, where plants are seen from a big panel of glass.

Astronauts can reach out for the plants, take care of them and replant if necessary.

The Control Station

The Control Station gets all the information of what to do about the crop and later transmits it to the sensors.

It controls all the aspects of the Cultivation.

What we took into consideration

To come up with our final proposal we had to give thought to some factors.

Temperature and humidity

Control of the temperature and humidity of the atmosphere of the crop for the plants to grow.

Autonomy

Autonomy and self-sufficiency of the cultivation so that it is not necessary for the human being to be aware of the plant and it can grow without having to be manipulated all the time manually.

Space Radiation

Protect the plants from against space radiation.

Weight

We also took into consideration the weight we can take in the space shuttle, and we found that it can only be taken 65,000 payloads.
